The Holistic Approach to Pet Care - welcome to my first blog post

Updated: Jan 19

To start, What is a Holistic Vet?

Anna Rodriguez - Green Balance Vet

Holistic veterinary medicine considers the entire well-being of an animal, focusing on the many factors and connection affecting health to address to the root cause of illness. These factors include diet, lifestyle, emotional health as well as physical health and medical history. A holistic approach is especially important where the illness is chronic or where it is complex (when an animal has several different diseases).

In this post, I'll delve into some of the reasons why both vets and pet owners should consider consulting with a holistic vet and integrating holistic practices into their pet care.

1. Comprehensive Care for the Whole Pet:

Holistic vets approach pet care with a comprehensive mindset. This addresses not only visible physical ailments but also considers the emotional and environmental factors that may also have an impact on an animal's health. This holistic perspective ensures that the pet is treated as a whole, and not separate parts, and every aspect of the pet's well-being is taken into account during diagnosis and treatment.

2. Whole body/mind approach

Often in today's modern medicine, illness is approached system by system. As an example you see a cardiologist for a heart problem, a gastroenterologist for a digestive issue. This is called a reductionist approach – the cardiologist won't consider digestive health in their diagnosis and treatment and vice versa. Holistic vets understand that each body system is interrelated and inseparable from the others. A holistic vet will look at the whole body, how each system interacts with each other and how disease will affect all of the bodily systems not just one of them.

2. Complementary Therapies and Modalities:

Holistic vets will often incorporate complementary therapies and modalities, such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, lifestyle, supplement and nutritional advice. These therapies complement traditional veterinary treatments, providing additional options for managing chronic, long standing conditions, and improving overall wellness. Conditions that are incurable, in particular chronic pain, often respond well to this expanded approach to treatment. Integration of these therapies may contribute to a more holistic and balanced approach to health care.

3. Considering a Different Perspective:

Holistic vets will often consider disease processes from a different angle to traditional veterinary practitioners, and will try to find underlying causes for recurrent and long standing disease processes, particularly those that do no respond well to conventional medication. This is often a long process, that requires an intimate knowledge of the pet and their environment, however diet and lifestyle changes can often make dramatic improvements, particularly with recurrent skin or gut issues.

4. Preventive Medicine with a Focus on Wellness:

Holistic veterinary care emphasises preventive medicine with a strong focus on promoting overall wellness. Regular consultations with a holistic vet can include discussions about nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle factors that contribute to a pet's well-being. By proactively addressing these elements, pet owners and vets can work together to prevent health issues before they arise.

5. Reduced Dependence on Pharmaceuticals:

While conventional veterinary medicine plays a crucial role in treating certain conditions, holistic veterinarians often seek to minimise the use of pharmaceuticals when complementary approaches can be effective. This can be particularly appealing to pet owners who are interested in exploring more natural and holistic options for their pets, or when side effects from medications are interfering with quality of life.

6. Stress Reduction and Emotional Well-being:

Holistic veterinary care recognises the impact of stress and emotional well-being on an animal's health. Herbal supplements, diet changes, environment and lifestyle alterations, often with behaviour modification can all be used to enhance emotional well being.

7. Collaborative and Open Communication:

Holistic vets take a collaborative approach, working closely with pet owners to understand their lifestyle, values, and goals for their pets, to ensure clear knowledge of desired outcomes. Longer consultation are usually offered to obtain as much information as possible. They also focus on communicating with referring vets, physios and other people involved with your pet’s care to ensure everyone is on the same page. This open communication fosters a strong partnership between holistic vets and pet owners, leading to more effective and personalised care plans.

Conclusion:

Incorporating holistic veterinary care into your pet’s care can offer a more comprehensive and individualised approach to their health. By embracing complementary therapies, preventive measures, and a holistic mindset, vets and pet owners can work together to ensure the overall well-being of our cherished companions. Consider consulting with a holistic vet to explore new dimensions of pet care that focus on the whole animal – body, mind, and spirit.
